New Video from Hey Ocean!

One of my favourite up and coming Vancouver pop bands, Hey Ocean!, has just released their new video for A Song About California, a quirky, upbeat tune from their first album. Cheeky, fun, and showcasing lead singer Ashleigh Ball’s cuteness to the max, it’s a fun romp through the world of love and laundromats, spread across the pages of their very own magazine.

Hey Ocean – A Song About California

Hey Ocean! has come a long way in the last year and a half since I interviewed them at the Media Club, playing with well known bands like Xavier Rudd and Bedouin Soundclash and are on their way to South by Southwest this month. Fortunately for us, they’ll also be in town for the upcoming Juno Awards at the end of March and will be playing a gig at the Media Club with Current Swell and Zaki Ibrahim, a show not to be missed!

Their 2008 album, It’s Easier To Be Somebody Else, is available on iTunes.

There’s more Hey Ocean! goodness over at their myspace page.

Who doesn’t like stats about every minute detail of their own lives? Enter Daytum!

Daytum Logo

DAYTUM is a new tool, in beta, that allows you to start “collecting and communicating your daily data”. Because we’re not interested in what large groups of people are doing or thinking anymore, it’s all about breaking it down… way down.

Wanna measure how often you have left-overs for lunch, instead of a burger? How about comparing how often you take the bus versus walking versus flying a magic carpet to your destination?

Daytum can help with all these things. It works by providing a simple interface for you to update simple statistics. Or you can update while on the go using Twitter and some straightforward commands. Unfortunately I was not able to access the beta, so I can’t comment on how well it works, but it’s an novel concept and I can see this becoming popular with the Twitterati… not only do they want to tweet about their thoughts, with Daytum they can let the world know detailed stats on the day to day.

Of course this would eventually lead to amazing amounts of data on users… 80% of people that drink tea prefer this brand of beer, 45% of people that watch this movie, eat leftoveres in the mornings, etc.

Daytum, hurry up and give me my damn beta account. Please :)

Happy Valentine’s Day!

It’s funny to me how it’s become so cool to be jaded about Valentine’s Day. It’s a “commercial holiday”, an excuse to sell Hallmark cards and roses and all that crap. Anybody who’s truly romantic won’t buy into it, because true romance doesn’t happen on only one day of the year.

That’s so true. I absolutely believe that romance should be an ongoing thing, all year long. There’s no reason why you can’t take bring your loved one flowers or take them out for dinner on a random Tuesday in September… just cause!

Having said that, I’m also pretty tired of the naysayers of these “commercial holidays”. Honestly, all holidays are commercial these days… from Christmas to Easter to Canada Day, they’re all excuses to sell more stuff.

But we live in a commercial society, so I don’t mind that. Hell, our economy is dependent upon us buying into the commercialism of our seasons.

So having said all that, I’d like to wish you all a very happy, romantic, overly commercialized, yet still sentimental and loving Valentine’s Day! :)

Ladyhawke IS the big album of 2009!

LadyhawkeIf you haven’t heard the buzz yet, just wait… you will. This Kiwi singer-songwriter has been talked about since last fall, so when I finally got my hands on her album I was a bit wary. Too many artists are coming out of nowhere, predicted to be the next big thing and sound like everybody else.

I’m a believer.

This album is intense, it’s got beats and I can’t stop playing it. What’s amazing is she wrote and played most of the instruments herself. Not bad for a 27 year old New Zealander. I hear a lot of Chrissie Hynde in this record, and that’s not a bad thing.

Listen to “Magic”. Listen to it often.
